Is ESD Danger Real?

Storms

Stormy weather can cause lightning and thunder which are considered Electrostatic discharge (ESD) events on a grand scale.  These events are colorful and dramatic, but are not the forms of static electricity that we are focusing on here. The type of ESD event we are concerned with stopping are those that occur in sensitive electronic equipment which occur every day.  These events typically occur in the course of normal human interaction with their surroundings and they are hardly ever noticed, much less seen.

ESD is the sudden flow of electricity between two electrically charged objects caused by contact, and can cause an electrical short, or dielectric breakdown. The buildup of static electricity can be caused by "tribocharging" or "electrostatic induction". The release comes when the differently charged objects are brought close proximity, sometimes even creating a visible spark between them.

ESD can cause the failure of solid-state electronics components such as integrated circuits. It is important when working with electronics that your environment is free of static.  Establishing electrostatic protective areas in the workplace for handling these items is paramount in protecting your investment. You should use every measure to prevent charging electronics in your workplace implementing a program following these basic rules.

Each environment presents its own unique ESD challenges and Q source has partnered with industry experts that lead the field in setting up and testing these protected environments.  Minimize your risk of ESD exposure by providing an environment free of static build up.  Tools, workbenches, clothing and electronic equipment in the work-area can all contribute to an ESD event. Protect you investments by protecting your environment.   If you have any questions about ESD products or you don’t see what you need, call 855-802-4006 for assistance.
